Is It Time for a 200A or 400A Service Upgrade? Here’s How to Tell
If your home was built more than 10 to 20 years ago, chances are it was wired for far
less power than the average family needs today. Between electric vehicles, hot tubs,
modern appliances, kitchen remodels, basement fit outs, and HVAC systems homes are
demanding more energy than ever – and older 100 amp or 200 amp service panels can
only do so much.
Upgrading to a 200A or even a 400A service isn’t just about capacity (although breaker
space is very important). It’s about safety, efficiency, and preparing your home for the
future. You might notice signs like flickering lights, warm panel boxes, or constantly
tripping breakers. You may have Pushmatic breakers or other absolute breakers like
Zinsco, Federal Pacific, Challenger, or General Switch (or even old screw in fuses). You
might see rusted or non-serviceable equipment or exposed and frayed wiring on the
exterior at the meter location (called the service entrance). Perhaps you are planning an
addition or installing a high-draw appliance like a Tesla charger or heat pump. These
are all good indicators that your service may need an upgrade.
