What is a GFCI outlet?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is designed to shut off power instantly if it detects an electrical imbalance, helping prevent shocks. These outlets are required in areas where water is present.

 

How does a GFCI work?

GFCI outlets monitor the flow of electricity by comparing the amount of current going out of the hot wire and then returning to the neutral wire. If it senses an imbalance, it means the electricity is going along an unintended path and “leaking”, oftentimes in water. These outlets trip very quickly when they sense moisture to prevent a shock. 

 

Where are GFCI outlets required?

Typically required in areas prone to moisture or water leaks.

  • Garages
  • Basements
  • Outdoor areas
  • Laundry rooms

 

How do I know if I have a GFCI outlet? 

GFCI outlets have “test” and “reset” buttons, some newer GFCI outlets have a small indicator light that is often red or green. 

Why is my GFCI outlet tripping? 

Moisture is one of the most common causes of a trip. Other causes include, bad appliances with damaged internal wiring, wiring problems like loose wirenuts or frayed cables, and an old unit that is wearing out. 

 

Ways to prevent GFCI tripping

Prevent excess moisture, avoid plugging in medical equipment and large appliances, and replace bad outlets.
