February 19th, 2021 Comments off

Who do you know that was spooked by this recent line of storms and related power outages?

The reality is that with the continued deterioration of our aging power grids and the rapid increase in dramatic weather events these situations are going to become more common place. Have you experienced multiple extended power outages at your home in the last two years that caused the loss of food in your refrigerator and freezers? Have you had electronics within your home damaged because of surges, spikes, or sags in your utility power? Now more than ever we are dependent on ensuring our electronics are in working condition due to a multitude of families still working from home or attending school virtually. It only takes a second to ruin your investment. We supply and install the best generators in the business.

The LP or natural gas powered units are clean, quiet, and nearly odor free. Here at Artisan Electric we have the full package of solution, design, installation, warranty and service that is second to none in the area.

Things to consider when shopping for a back-up generator:

When shopping for your home generator consider the warranty on the product and ensure you know who is standing behind that warranty when the time comes. Consider who is supplying and installing your generator and ask if they are reliable trade’s professions with training, education, and time to do the job right. Be sure to ask if you will have available emergency service if your generator fails to start or function when you need it most. Ensure you understand when and who to contact when your generator requires routine maintenance, this is typically completed by a factory qualified service technician. While you have the option of purchasing a home generator from your local home improvement store or online, the best way to determine your needs and ensure the unit is properly installed is to work with your local dealer to determine your electrical needs. Your dealer will also help you find areas where the energy efficiency of your home can be improved, and determine how much capacity you will need for your critical loads. Even if you decide to invest in a whole house solution, working with your local dealer to improve the energy efficiency of your home will save you thousands of dollars over the life of the system in addition to lowering the initial cost of the unit since a smaller unit would suffice.

Whether you are in the early phases of a new housing construction project, or about to undertake a major renovation of an existing home, or just wanting to sleep better at night knowing you won’t have to worry about not having power during an outage, now would be a great time to include a permanent standby generator as part of the energy independence and energy efficiency plan for the home. Does Your Home Office Need “Extra” Surge Protection?

.

home office desk with computer

Home offices require a number of electronic devices.

Working from home has become the “new normal” for many of us. In order to be productive at our residence, we’ve installed additional computers, monitors, printers, scanners and other electronic equipment.

These are all devices that are essential to doing our jobs. What would happen if all of this necessary equipment went out at once?  What would you do then?

Power Surges Can Hit at Any Time, Anywhere

With the spring/summer thunderstorm season just getting started, now is the time to make sure all your recently added electronic equipment is properly protected from electrical surges. Surges from lightning strikes can instantly ruin unprotected and poorly protected computers, printers and other electronic devices, even your programmable coffeemaker.

Electrical surges can occur at any time.  The most damaging are lightning strikes close to your home that enter through the power, telephone and cable TV lines. Although surges caused by lightening are the most destructive, it is more common that surges result from motors in our large appliances kicking on and off and creating electrical spikes within your home.

Today’s homes are more reliant than ever on appliances and electronics that are controlled by extremely sensitive microprocessor circuits. These circuits are easily damaged or disrupted by power surges originating both inside and outside the home.

Sensitive electronic circuits are susceptible to electrical surges.

Take These Steps to Protect Valuable Electronics

Step 1: Ask a qualified electrician to take a look at what you have in your home or office that is susceptible to power surges and where surge protection is warranted.

Step 2: Add surge protection at the main power panel, cable TV/satellite service and telephone service. This prevents major electrical spikes from outside sources i.e. lightning strikes, from entering your home.

Step 3: Or, if you choose, install individual surge protectors for each device to protect sensitive electronics from surges from both inside and outside your home.

Avoid Expensive Replacement or Repair Bills

Protecting your valuable assets now by adding surge protection will prevent you from dealing with expensive replacement or repair bills later.

Preventing Damaging Power Surges

How to Stop Sneaky Power Surges from Damaging Your Electronics

motherboard hit by electrical surge

Power surges from different sources can all cause damage to electronic devices.

“Just had it happen to us,” noted Chris Voglund, owner of Artisan Electric. “We had surge protection on all of our devices, but a recent spike through the electric company’s transformer was so fast, it still knocked out a couple of our more sensitive electronic pieces of equipment.  We are now installing surge protection at the outside electrical panel to prevent this from happening again.”

Causes of Power Surges
Although lightning strikes are the most visible examples of what causes damaging power surges, they are not the most common reason.  Other more common sources are faulty electrical equipment from outside the home, and internal power surges caused by larger appliance motors on refrigerators, A/C units, and microwave ovens.

Smaller, repeated power surges may also slowly damage your electronic equipment. Repetitive, small power surges shorten the life of appliances and electronics. Your electronic devices may continue to function following small surges until the integrity of the electronic components finally degrades and your computers, TV’s and other electronics mysteriously stop working.

Types of surge protectors

How to Prevent Damage from Power Surges
Power surges caused by lightning can enter the home through the cable TV or satellite dish cable, the incoming telephone lines or through the electrical service line.

Knowing that power surges can take several paths and do not always enter through the electrical panel indicates a good surge protection system should include:

  • Protection of the incoming electrical service
  • Some type of protection of phone lines and cable TV lines
  • Point-of-use surge protectors at sensitive and expensive appliances

When deciding on what type of and how much surge protection is needed, each house and its contents should be assessed individually. An electrician knowledgeable about power surge protection systems and the history of problems in your area is a valuable resource.

Lightning storm over city

Lightning is the most visible form of power surge, but not the most common.

The Odds Are Not In Our Favor
Many of us think a power surge won’t happen to our home or business, so we are hesitant to spend the extra money on a complete surge protection system.

There are over 20 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes detected per year in the 48 contiguous states of the U.S.  The 10 year average for Indiana is 425, 478 per year. Odds are that it will happen to you at some point.

When you are a victim of a power surge either by lightning or other cause, the consequences can be expensive.  Replacing TV’s, appliances and computers are all high ticket items.  Unless you have additional coverage on your homeowner’s insurance policy, standard policies typically don’t cover damaged items from a power surge.  Renter’s insurance policies usually don’t provide this kind of coverage either, meaning tenants must get compensation from their landlord.

Power Strips Are Not Surge Protectors
It is also helpful to remember that power strips and surge protectors are different.  Using a power strip as a surge protector will not typically give you adequate protection. Power strips are multi-outlet products that allow you to plug-in additional items into one outlet. They usually have a circuit breaker, but most won’t protect your valuable home electronics completely.

Surge Protection Can Save You Thousands of Dollars and Tons of Aggravation

How much can Surge Protection save you? That depends on how much you’ve invested in your home theatre; audio and computer equipment; and home appliances.

Electrical Spikes Come from Multiple Sources
The dreaded lightning strike on or near your home can quickly take out your home’s electronic devices including your computer, TV, audio equipment and alarm system.  It can also damage and/or degrade larger items like refrigerators, washers and dryers, and other home appliances.

Power surges are also caused by appliances inside your home from larger motors like refrigerators, microwave ovens, tools and HVAC systems.  When electrical spikes occur from these motors, sensitive electronic devices can be affected.

How do you protect your home and equipment from these highly disruptive power surges?

houseStep 1: Ask a qualified electrician to take a look at what you have in your home or office that is susceptible to power surges and where surge protection is warranted.

Step 2: Add surge protection at the main power panel, cable TV/satellite service and telephone service.  This protects inside your home from major electrical spikes from outside sources i.e. lightning strikes.

Step 3: Install smaller surge protectors to protect sensitive electronics inside your home from power surges caused by large appliances and other motors within your home.

Step 4:  Protect equipment located outside the home such as the air conditioning unit, pool pump or well pumps.

Avoid Expensive Replacement or Repair Bills
Protecting your valuable assets now by adding surge protection will prevent you from dealing with expensive replacement or repair bills later.
